THE CAVE DWELLINGS OF BELVÈS

Les Troglodytes is what the French called the people who, for 50,000 years until the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, lived in the recesses of the cliffs. Whole towns of more than a 1,000 inhabitants arose in the cliffs of some places, such as La Roque Saint Christophe. Underground cave dwellings under the market square can be visited in Belvès. They give an interesting impression of the life of the poor in the Middle Ages.
