Noirmoutier is known for its small, traditional, white houses surrounded by flowers, the charm of the landscape and the Bois de la Chaise, the best known place on the island. Noirmoutier also means the Gois, a road that is covered by the sea at high tide but which connects the inhabitants of the island to the mainland at low water. Many fishermen use the road to reach the island on foot.
